US returns ancient artefacts to Peru

The artefacts were looted from pre-Columbian graves and smuggled into the US

The US has returned about 20 ancient artefacts – some more than 1,800 years old – to Peru.

The objects include pottery and pieces looted from ancient Peruvian graves dating back from before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th Century.

They were found during four separate investigations over several years by US the customs service.

A spokesman said the objects belonged to the people of Peru, and were part of the country’s rich heritage.

Investigators say a middleman in Peru bought some of the pre-Columbian items from local farmers in Peru who robbed burial sites. They were then shipped by post to a smuggler in the US.

Since 2007 the US authorities have returned 7,150 items to 27 countries including France, China, Poland and Iraq.

Press freedom in Americas worsens

At a 2009 protest by journalists in Venezuela – a country singled out by the IAPA – a banner reads: “In democracy expression is free”

Freedoms of the press and of expression in the Americas have seen a “marked deterioration” in the past six months, a leading advocacy group has said.

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) said there had been a “significant increase in direct and indirect censorship and physical attacks on journalists”.

The Miami-based group said media workers in almost all the countries of the region had been affected.

The watchdog singled out Venezuela.

“[Venezuelan] police forces and police-style groups on the orders of the government left… several journalists injured,” the IAPA said in a press release.

“Physical attacks on journalists were also recorded during coverage of various election processes in Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, and street protests in the American city of Ferguson and in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,” it added.

The IAPA also reported that over the past six months:

The advocacy group warned that in Argentina, Haiti, Chile and Colombia the government could use existing laws to “meddle in editorial content and criteria”.

It also said that the lack of transparency and access to public information continued to be an obstacle to the free practice of journalism in several countries, including Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina and Peru.

The IAPA report came at the end of its 70th General Assembly, which was held in the Chilean capital, Santiago.

Southampton demolished Sunderland at St Mary’s in a game which saw Santiago Vergini score one of the Premier League’s most spectacular own goals.

Saints’ 8-0 win not perfect – Koeman

Poyet embarrassed by 8-0 defeat

Cork and midfield partner Morgan Schneiderlin both completed over 90% of their passes as Sunderland consistently failed to get close to their opponents and the dominance in midfield proved telling as the home side created chance after chance in the second period.

Tadic was denied by a goal-line clearance from Patrick van Aanholt shortly after the break, but after Mannone saved from Pelle, Bridcutt could not clear from under his own cross-bar and bundled the ball into his own net.

Pelle, who now has six goals in eight league games, celebrated sheepishly, but he soon had another goal he could claim as his own when he smartly swept Tadic’s pass home.

No team in the Premier League or Football League has conceded as few league goals (five) or home league goals (one) as Southampton.

Tadic, who like Pelle, was imported from the Dutch league this summer, looked every inch his £10.9m price tag as he teased the visiting defence and when Mannone passed the ball straight to his feet, he duly curled into an empty net from 30 yards.

It was another Sunderland donation but Tadic continued to show little mercy as he fed Wanyama who smashed home from 12 yards and then set up Mane for his first goal in English football.
