Following the annulment of the March 31, 2019 elections, an indictment was prepared against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu for publicly insulting YSK members, demanding a sentence of prison for up to 4 years and 1 month.
In the indictment prepared by the Attorney General’s Office of Anatolia, it was stated that 11 people working in the Supreme Election Commission (YSK) were victims. In the criminal complaint filed by the Presidency of the Supreme Election Commission, it was noted that the election of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality of İmamoğlu, which was held on March 31, 2019, was canceled on May 6, 2019. It was claimed that Imamoglu was re-elected president of IMM in the new election and that he insulted YSK members in his press statement on November 4, 2019.
In the indictment, which also includes his written defense, it was stated that mamoğlu did not accept the accusation. An indictment was prepared with the request that İmamoğlu be sentenced to 1 year, 3 months, 15 days, 4 years and 1 month for the crime of “continuing insulting public officials working in committee”. If the indictment is accepted, İmamoğlu will appear before the judge.
