A circular concerning the implementation of the “Action Plan for the Sea of Marmara” has been sent to the ministries, governorates and municipalities concerned with the signature of the Minister of Environment and Urbanization Murat Kurum.
In the circular, it was recalled that the catastrophic pollution of marine saliva (mucilage), which emerged in the Sea of Marmara due to the temperature, the stagnation of sea water and the abundance of nitrogen-phosphorus, and which affects natural life in the Sea of Marmara, has started to be seen in recent days.
In the circular recalling that the Action Plan for the Sea of Marmara, which was prepared with the participation of the governorates, local governments, institutions and organizations concerned, non-governmental organizations and academics of the Sea of Marmara basin , under the coordination of the ministry in order to eliminate the pollution in question, was shared with the public on June 6, the following statements were included:
“The world’s largest clean-up campaign will be launched on June 8, 2021 regarding the elimination, collection and management of pollution caused by the mucilage in question 24/7. In this context, the Ministry of the Environment and Urbanization, Transport and Infrastructures Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Ministry of Health, all central, subordinate and provincial organizations, metropolitan municipalities, provincial and district municipalities, municipal solid waste unions, non-governmental organizations, by all relevant institutions and organizations, until the initiation and completion of this work. “The follow-up, control and supervision of all studies will be ensured by our Ministry. Within this framework, a Coordination and Information Center will be set up in Istanbul under the chairmanship of the Vice-Minister.”
At the Coordination and Information Center, it was stated in the circular that representatives of the General Directorate of Environmental Management, the General Directorate of EIA Authorizations and Inspection and a branch manager or technical personnel responsible for the environment will be appointed from among the provincial directorates of the environment. and town planning in the provinces of the Marmara Sea:
“The secretariat of the center will be provided by the General Directorate of Environmental Management. A coordination center will be set up under the chairmanship of the governor in the governorates in order to carry out and coordinate the work carried out and to be done on a provincial level. The secretariat services of the coordination center will be provided by the provincial directorates of the environment and town planning. In this study, the actions envisaged in the Action Plan for the Sea of Marmara will be carried out. All institutions, organizations, provincial and local organizations concerned administrations will support the work with all their staff, machinery, equipment, etc. In addition, metropolitan municipalities, provincial and district municipalities and municipal solid waste unions, as well as the management of mucilage and waste collected at sea in transport and disposal facilities They will carry out all the work necessary to this regard.
