Why students in South Africa are turning to food banks

Before the pandemic, about a third of college students in South Africa went to class hungry, research shows.

Now that problem is getting worse as part-time jobs have dried up during the lockdown and student families have lost their jobs.

Bianca Nonhlanhla Skhosana is a fourth year medical student at The Witwaterstrand University in Johannesburg. She is one of hundreds of college students who have had to turn to a food package program for help.
